BIOGRAPHY / PHILOSOPHY
Kieron Long A UK photographer based in Malaysian Borneo.
Based in the state of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo, Kieron documents life in his hometown of Kuching, and where his travels take him, usually as part of long-term projects, shooting in black and white with his Leica cameras.
He held his first solo exhibition, "Borneo in Monochrome," hosted by Leica Malaysia, in November 2019 in Kuala Lumpur.
He was a Leica Ambassador | Malaysia for 2021 – 2023, and an exhibitor at Leica Malaysia’s 2023 “Celebration of Photography.”
His second solo exhibition, “Life on the Water,” documenting the nomadic, seafaring Bajau Laut of Eastern Borneo, was in September 2024.
In May 2025, he was one of 50 selected Leica photographers from around the world to be an exhibitor at the “100 years of Leica: Witness to a century – Around the world with Leica” exhibition in Wetzlar, Germany, as part of the brand’s centennial celebrations.
He has conducted workshops for Leica, both theoretical and practical, online and in person. Most recently in September 2024 through the Leica Akademie.
As an established Leica photographer, Xiaomi Malaysia selected Kieron to help launch the Xiaomi 13T Pro nationally, a phone with a camera co-engineered with Leica, and subsequent launches for the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, Xiaomi 14T Pro, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, and currently the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. He was the featured photographer in a YouTube mini-documentary for the Xiaomi 13T Pro, which attracted a viewership of 2.5 million.
In 2024, Kieron was invited to attend the Xiaomi Masters Gathering in Berlin, Germany, as one of only three photographers from Asia.
In 2025, he was the only Sarawak-based photographer invited to be a speaker at the Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival. Kieron presented “Borneo in Black and White,” where he showcased three of his recent Borneo photo stories – Durian Season, Rice Harvest and Life on Water. He was also an onstage guest and expert photographer at an open forum hosted by Xiaomi Malaysia to answer questions on mobile photography.
In 2026, as a respected photographer using both Leica and Xiaomi, Kieron was selected and exhibited by both brands at “The Decisive Moment - A Visual Tribute by Xiaomi × Leica" at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
For the landmark 30th anniversary of the Kuala Lumpur Photo Festival in 2026, Kieron was invited as a guest speaker to talk about his work capturing spontaneous, authentic portraits, a consistent theme in his street photography.
Kieron Long captures real-life scenes, usually as part of long-term projects.
As a student of history and art, Kieron documents the present in his hometown of Kuching, and where his travels take him, for posterity.
Among the shadows, where the light fights the darkness, where the brightness pushes back the gloom, there are real-life stories waiting to be revealed and told to the world.
Kieron captures those stories using Leica monochrome.
Two fundamental colours — black and white, the very essence of photography — tell the stories in their simplest, purest form.
Using the polar opposites of dark and light, the extremes of shades on the spectrum, conveys the narrative in powerful, dramatic images without the distraction of clashing colours.
Kieron’s photos usually show an individual hero, a lone protagonist, or small groups of people of great character in their natural setting, typically against an architectural backdrop — be it their home, going about their business, in their place of play, or following their time-honoured traditions — living their lives as best they can.
Against the backlight, the human drama emerges that could be moments of pleasure and pain, struggle and survival, rest and relaxation, work and intense effort, romance and loneliness, hope and despair, exploration and introspection, celebration and the enjoyment of life.
In these moments — some very private, some very public — everyday life is shown with empathy to visually communicate that even commonplace occurrences have an inherent drama and poignancy that is worthy of wider attention and greater appreciation.
